Cal’s Mina advances to match play

June 24, 2009

Cal’s Eric Mina advanced to match play at the 98th annual California State Amateur Championship after he fired a second-round 73 to finish at 1-under par overall after two rounds of stroke play.

The tournament, which is being held at the par-72 Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, cut down the field to the top 32 players Tuesday. Now, those players will compete in match play today through Saturday, with the 36-hole championship match being held Saturday.

Defending champion Nick Delio and Geoff Gonzalez both finished with the best stroke play score at 9-under 135.

Martin Trainer, a Gunn High School grad, finished fourth (-5, 139) to advance to match play.

USF’s Domingo Jojola (+7, 151) and Cal’s Devin Hexner (+9, 153) both failed to make the cut.
