If Serena Williams was feeling the effects of her whirlwind trip from England after winning her fifth Wimbledon title on Saturday to the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford this week, it sure didn’t show in her first match of the tournament.

Williams made quick work of Stanford junior Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the tournament’s third round. Gibbs, the reigning NCAA singles and doubles champion, was a wild-card entrant into the event and beat Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in the first round to set up Wednesday’s match against one of the game’s biggest stars.

Williams won the Bank of the West Classic in 2011 and it catapulted her to an 18-match win streak that lasted until last year’s U.S. Open final.

“I had a great summer, and [the Bank of the West Classic] propelled me with getting a lot of confidence and so that really helped [last year],” Williams said earlier in the week.

Fifth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium was pushed to three sets, but eventually held off Britain’s Heather Watson 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Wickmayer will draw the difficult task of trying to unseat Williams
next.

In other action, South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers, the tourney’s sixth seed, cruised past Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-3, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic took on Coco Vandeweghe in a late-night match Wednesday.
