Jonathan Sanchez, the primary player involved in the trade that sent Melky Cabrera to the Giants, was designated for assignment, and the Kansas City Royals essentially replaced him on the roster with the minor-league player acquired in the Cabrera trade — Ryan Verdugo. Blue Jays’ Bautista placed on DL: The Toronto Blue Jays placed Jose Bautista on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left wrist. Bautista injured his wrist in Monday’s game at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays didn’t provide detailed results of an MRI exam and the timetable for his return is unknown. Bautista was tied for second in baseball with 27 home runs.

Votto undergoes knee surgery: Cincinnati Reds first basemen Joey Votto underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday to repair torn meniscus in his left knee.
Votto was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 16, and is expected to miss three to four weeks, the Reds said in a news release.

Etc.: The A’s reinstated outfielder Collin Cowgill from the 15-day disabled list after he recovered from a sprained ankle, and they optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento. ... Dodgers right-hander Chad Billingsley was placed on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to July 8.
