The Central Coast Section seeding and pairings were announced Sunday and Terra Nova drew the short straw.
The Tigers (8-2), after claiming their third consecutive Peninsula Athletics League Bay Division title, will take on West Catholic Athletic League champion Bellarmine (9-1) in the Open Division on Friday at 7 p.m.
It was not something Terra Nova coach Bill Gray expected to happen this season, but he was anticipating an eventual move to the Open Division.
“It’s a product of our success,” Terra Nova coach Bill Gray said. “We knew we’d eventually end up in the Open Division.”
Terra Nova claimed its third straight league title after defeating Menlo-Atherton 35-0 on Nov. 4. Bellarmine went undefeated in the run-dominated WCAL, with its only loss in its season opener against national power De La Salle 26-23.
“It remains to be seen if we can compete at this level, but we’ll give it our best shot,” Gray said.
Gray is hoping the pass-heavy Terra Nova offense can work in its favor.
“I don’t think they’ve seen a team that plays at the pace we do,” he said. Gray said Bellarmine runs a double-tight, double-wing offense and the Tigers have seen it before when they played Half Moon Bay and King’s Academy. “We’re confident we can structurally defend it and hopefully force them into some second-and-long and third-and-long situations,” he said.
The Tigers lost their only matchup with a WCAL team when they played Sacred Heart Cathedral on Sept. 2, a 32-31 defeat at Kezar Stadium.
