Sports briefs: Byrnes gets his payday

Scrappy outfielder Eric Byrnes has finally made it big financially. The former St. Francis High School of Mountain View star, who was poised to become a free agent after this season, signed a three-year, $30 million contract extension with the Arizona Diamondbacks. the former A’s outfielder is hitting .303 with 17 homers, 64 RBIs and 28 steals.

QB of ’51 USF team dies

Joe Brown, the quarterback on USF’s legendary undefeated 1951 football team, has died. Brown, 78, died Thursday of prostate cancer in Kennewick,Wash. Known as “All-Around” Brown during his days on the Hilltop, not only did he run the offense, he was a standout defender, punter and kicker. In 1952, Brown was drafted by the Chicago Bears and, in 1956, became the first player in franchise history to lead the NFL in passing. The two-time Pro Bowl pick also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers before leaving the NFL in 1965. He is survived by a sister, Greta Gerrie, brother Clarence Brown, son Beau Brown, daughter Brooke Brownie and grandchildren Bria and Brynn Brownie. The funeral service is Saturday at the Reif Mortuary in San Luis Obispo at 12:30 p.m.
