Smoke from Ferguson Fire forces Camp Mather to close

Camp Mather will close this week due to poor air quality caused by the nearby Ferguson Fire, San Francisco Recreation and Parks officials announced Tuesday.

The Ferguson Fire is on its nineteenth day, according to state data, and is continuing southwest of Yosemite National Park.

Camp Mather, a city-owned camp that sits in the shadow of Yosemite, will reopen Sunday Aug. 5, conditions permitting.

Those campers who arrived Sunday July 29 will get a refund, as will those who are scheduled to arrive for “future sessions,” according to Rec and Park. The Ferguson Fire has burned more than 57,000 acres and has “periodically affected the air quality at camp,” leading Camp Mather staff to remain in “constant contact” with safety and fire officials.

Rec and Park also advises families making other trips throughout California to check air quality conditions when making plans.

The Ferguson Fire was 33 percent contained Tuesday with 3,600 personnel actively engaging the fire, according to state data, and has caused two fatalities and eight injuries to date.
