Signal malfunction causes underground Muni delays

Trending Articles

San Francisco Municipal Railway underground light-rail service is behind schedule this afternoon due to a signal malfunction at the Embarcadero station, Muni officials said.

Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland said inbound trains are being forced to run at reduced speeds because of the glitch.

The signal shutdown affected the entire subway system Monday morning, starting around 9:45 a.m., backing up dozens of trains and leaving thousands of travelers looking for other transportation.

The signal problem has been resolved but residual delays continued into the afternoon.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose said a signal malfunction shut down the entire subway between about 9:45 and 10:30 a.m. By about 10:15 a.m., eight N-Judah trains had stacked up behind the Church and Duboce stops, and hundreds of people awaited aboveground transportation on Market Street.

As of 5:00 p.m., trains were still advancing very slowly through the system. Rose could not say when the system would be back to normal.

Delays are expected to last through the commute hour.
