SFSU runners earn All-West Region honors

For the second time in program history, the San Francisco State men’s cross country team featured a pair of runners to earn All-West Region honors.

Seniors Benji Preciado and Kenny Trejo nabbed the distinction at last weekend’s NCAA Division II West Region Championship, in which Preciado finished 13th and Trejo 16th.

As a team, the Gators finished in eighth place, which eliminates them from competing in the national race.

Adrian Calva was named to the All-West Region team by taking 14th, which is the highest individual finish for an SFSU athlete since 2002. Her time of 21:49.35 represents the third fastest time in a 6K race in school history.

The Gators’ traditionally solid wrestling team participated in the 49th Annual SFSU College Open on Saturday.

Mitchell Owens came in second in the 184-pound weight class while Mike Marshal (184), Thomas Turcol (149) and Landon Myers (157) each took a spot on the podium as third-place finishers.

In a dual meet, the Gators lost to both Cal Poly and Indiana.

The San Francisco State Tip-Off Classic will serve as the men’s basketball team’s official tip off to the 2016-17 season this weekend.

The Gators will host the Academy of Art, Stanislaus State and Dominican University in the Don Nasser Family Plaza over Friday and Saturday.

The women’s basketball team opens up its season on the road at the Western Oregon/Hamptons Inn D2 Shootout on Saturday.
