San Francisco State University’s men’s soccer win over Sonoma State, 1-0, on Saturday marked the first time since 1978 the program made the postseason. On Tuesday, the Gators beat UC San Diego, 1-0.

The two shutouts were freshman goalie Peter Swinkels’ first of the season.

Feliciano Cardenas accounted for the only goal in the Gators’ first playoff game. He headed it into the bottom-right corner of the net in the 49th minute of the game. Aydan Bowers threw it in to Tariq Pulskamp, who also got an assist by flicking it over to Cardenas.

Swinkels had four saves in the contest, Bowers was responsible for the Gators’ fifth by preventing the ball from crossing the line with less than six minutes to play.

SFSU plays next against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at UCSD.
