SFSU Hall of Famer passes away — College Roundup

San Francisco State University announced that Hall of Famer Don “Pete” Liebengood passed away on Dec. 22. He was 73. Liebengood graduated from SFSU in 1967. He played football for the university from 1962-65. In his final season, he was named All-Far West Conference offensive tackle. He was inducted into the university’s HOF in 1988. After college, Liebengood served in the California National Guard before starting his career as a sports broadcaster. He worked in Sacramento for KCRA and in The City for KRON. In recent years, he ran Fresh Takes, a nonprofit media arts center that served underprivileged youth.

USF

Fresh off its biggest win of the season, the University of San Francisco men’s basketball team starts conference play today. The Dons will play at the University of San Diego. On Saturday, USF (8-5) logged an impressive victory over the University of Nevada, 66-64. Five players finished the contest with double-figure scoring. But it was Jordan Ratinho who played the hero by sinking a last-second 3-pointer to put San Francisco ahead. The loss sunk Nevada to 11-3. “[It’s] great for our program and great for our guys to be able to beat one of the best teams in the west, they are definitely an NCAA Tournament caliber team, that can win games in the NCAA Tournament,” head coach Kyle Smith said in a news release. ”That really should give us come confidence.”

ART U

The Academy of Art University women’s basketball team is hoping some travel can get its season back on track. The Urban Knights have had a rough go of it so far, starting the year 2-11. They’ll play at Fresno Pacific on Saturday before heading to Hawaii for games against Hawaii Pacific and UH-Hilo next week. Art U hasn’t played since Dec. 18, when the team blew a double-digit lead and eventually lost, 94-62, to Point Loma at Kezar Pavilion.
