SF robbery suspect killed by police identified as 19 year old

Authorities have identified the armed robbery suspect shot and killed by police in the Mission District late Tuesday night as a 19 year old with no known address.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified Jesus Delgado-Duarte as the man who died in a hail of police gunfire while inside the trunk of a car near 21st and Capp streets. Delgado-Duarte was one of three suspects in an armed robbery that occurred a block away from the police shooting.

Delgado-Duarte was hidden in the the back of a black Honda Civic with the trunk ajar when police surrounded the vehicle. KPIX obtained bystander video appearing to show a person, now identified as Delgado-Duarte, stick a handgun out of the trunk and fire off a round in the direction of police.

The video then appears to show police unleashing a flurry of gunfire that ripped through the rear-end of the car. Delgado-Duarte died at the scene. Police later recovered a handgun in the trunk.

At a vigil Wednesday evening, those who knew Delgado-Duarte said he graduated from John O’Connell High School in the Mission and worked at a MetroPCS store near 20th and Mission streets.

Delgado-Duarte was also known as Adolfo Delgado. Demonstrators at the vigil marched to Mission Police Station carrying signs that said “Justice for Adolfo Delgado.”

The police shooting was the second this year. On Feb. 17, seven officers shot 65 rounds at a homicide suspect in the Design District who allegedly fired two bullets at police first. No one was injured. The suspect, Joel Armstrong, is being tried on murder and numerous counts of attempted murder.
