SF man arrested in fatal shooting near Bayview housing project

A San Francisco man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday near the Bayview housing project where he allegedly shot and killed a 61-year-old man a day earlier, according to police.

Cardell Mason Coleman, 24, was booked into County Jail in connection with the fatal shooting of Hayward resident Rolando Romero on Monday.

Romero was shot near the Alice Griffith housing project at Arelious Walker Drive and Fitzgerald Avenue around 5:20 a.m.

Authorities found Romero suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and rushed him to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he died.

On Tuesday at around 12:48 a.m., plainclothes officers from Bayview Police Station and officers assigned to patrol public housing arrested Coleman on the same block as the shooting.

Coleman is being held without bail, according to jail records.

According to a GoFundMe page set up in his name, Romero worked as a security guard for a construction site. “He is a great brother, husband, uncle, grandfather and a friend,” the online fundraiser read.

Romero, who was also known as Rolly, had worked in the U.S. for 23 years, according to the page. The page had raised just over $400 as of Tuesday evening. The money is expected to be used for burial expenses.

The shooting marked the 22nd homicide of the year in San Francisco.
