The 50-year-old man who died in an apparent suicide Tuesday in San Francisco County Jail was arrested last weekend by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of twice violating a stay-away order, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Alberto Carlos Petrolino, a San Francisco resident, was arrested Saturday on two misdemeanor warrants, Sheriff’s Department legal counsel Mark Nicco said. He died three days later while in custody at the County Jail’s Hall of Justice facility in South of Market.

Petrolino appeared in court Monday and was held with bail set at $100,000, Nicco said. He was represented by the Public Defender’s Office.

Petrolino’s death is being investigated by three different city agencies — Sheriff’s Department, Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office.

No further information has been released on the manner of death.
