SF enduring biggest rainstorm in nearly a year

Rain will continue to fall in San Francisco at least through Tuesday, marking what could be the most rain to fall in The City in nearly a year, according to the National Weather Service.

So far nearly 1 inch of rain has fallen since 10 p.m. Sunday, and through Tuesday The City is expected to receive at least 1 to 2 inches, forecaster Steve Anderson said. Winds are expected to pick up through Monday as well, making for a wet evening commute.

However, no major flooding is anticipated, Anderson said.

“We expect some flooded roadways,” he said. “Just be aware of that during the evening commute. [People] may have some puddles to have to deal with but nothing major.”

The last major rainstorm in San Francisco was in February 2017, when The City received 1.8 inches of rain.

Free sandbags are available to San Francisco residents to help protect their homes, according to Public Works. The sandbags may be picked up at the Public Works operations yard Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The yard is located at 2323 Cesar Chavez St. Residents should enter at the Marin Street/Kansas Street gate.

Sandbags are limited to 10 per address, and proof of San Francisco residency is required.
