SF bans sale of upholstered furniture containing flame retardant chemicals

Supervisor Mark Farrell’s legislation to ban the sale of upholstered furniture and children’s products containing flame retardant chemicals was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

The chemicals are blamed for high rates of cancers among firefighters and for causing learning disabilities in children.

After Panasonic complained about the impacts on their electronic massage chairs, the proposal was amended to give them an additional six months to comply.

The ban goes into effect January 2019.
