A man previously convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the strangling death of a lover at Buena Vista Park as well as other assault and arson charges has been caught on camera lighting a sleeping homeless man on fire, according to court documents filed by prosecutors.

David Munoz Diaz, 28, made a brief appearance in court Tuesday on new charges including attempted murder, arson causing great bodily injury, false imprisonment and possession or manufacture of combustible material or incendiary device.

Diaz was arrested again on March 8 after he was caught on security cameras lighting the arm of a homeless man on fire, according to a report from The Examiner’s sister publication SF Weekly.

Passersby were able to help the man extinguish the flames before he was seriously injured.

Diaz was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2014 in the death of 23-year-old Freddy Roberto Canul-Arguello, whose body was found burning in a blue recycling bin in Buena Vista Park in 2011.

Diaz said he had strangled Canul-Arguello during sex and then panicked and burned the body in the bin to cover the evidence.

Following his release from jail he was arrested again in 2015 in connection with a series of arsons and again in 2016 on assault charges. Until his arrest last week, he was out of custody on mandatory supervision.
