Security guard shoots, injures man in SoMa

San Francisco police say a man was shot by a security guard in the South of Market neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the area of Fifth and Howard streets near the Burlington Coat Factory, according to police spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan.

The victim, a 32-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

The shooting happened after an apparent altercation between the victim, a suspected shoplifter, and the security guard, Officer Daniel Kelly told the San Francisco Examiner at the scene. Both the suspected shoplifter and the security guard were detained by police, according to Kelly.

The Burlington Coat Factory was set to remain closed for the remainder of the day.

One would-be customer said he arrived to see the department store locked and its entrance cordoned off with yellow tape.

“I came here to shop but then saw that it was closed. I heard there was a shooting — this is not what I expected,” said the man, who identified himself by his first name, Beto.

An employee of the Intercontinental Hotel, located across the street from the Burlington Coat Factory, said that she arrived for her shift at 2:30 p.m. and witnessed an estimated 10 police cars blocking the intersection.

By 4:30 p.m., the scene had largely cleared. Several officers who remained could be seen combing through the interior of the department store.
