Thanks, Julia Roberts, for taking a stand against the tyranny of heels.
On Thursday, the actress, in France to promote her new movie, walked her first Cannes Film Festival red carpet — without shoes, USA Today reports.
Wearing an off-the-shoulders gown and a necklace with an emerald the size of a boulder, Roberts took off her high heels (and had an attendant discreetly carry them).
Not far from “Money Monster” director Jodie Foster, co-star George Clooney and his wife Amal, Roberts skipped up the stairs, displaying her huge grin, and toes, for the photo corps.
The move was particularly bold in the wake of 2015’s so-called Flatgate, during which Cannes organizers, enforcing a “heels on red carpet rule,” turned away a group of women in their 50s, in flats, from a screening of “Carol.”
Roberts, who apparently made it past security, wisely made the decision to remove her pumps just at the bottom of the steps, to avoid a mishap while climbing them. (Last year, Rooney Mara from “Carol” tripped on the red carpet.)
Gossip sites note that Roberts is notorious for going without shoes. She didn’t wear them at the 2013 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, on Ellen DeGeneres’ show in 2014, and when she married Lyle Lovett in 1993.
MELISSA SETTLES SUIT
The Joan Rivers malpractice lawsuit has settled — for an undisclosed dollar amount.
TMZ reports that the settlement was reached unusually quickly, and that it never reached the deposition stage.
Melissa Rivers sued Yorkville Endoscopy in New York, where her mom went into cardiac arrest in 2014, claiming negligence.
Also named in the suit were the clinic’s former director Dr. Lawrence Cohen, anesthesiologist Robert Koniuta and Dr. Gwen Korovin, Rivers’ personal ear, nose and throat doctor who allegedly was not authorized to be in the room at the time the comedy star went in for a routine procedure on Aug. 28, 2014.
Melissa Rivers says she’s happy “those culpable for [Joan’s] death have accepted responsibility for their actions quickly and without equivocation.” She hopes the lawsuit and settlement will prompt improved standards in outpatient surgery clinics.
