Woman flees kidnapping gone awry in SoMa

A botched attempt to kidnap and rob a woman in South of Market led a pair of apparently dim muggers to engage in a wild police chase Friday, injuring a pedestrian in a wheelchair and damaging several cars and a tree, police said.

Jesus Duran, 28, and Javier Perez, 27, both of San Francisco, are in custody and face multiple felony charges related to the incident.

The victim, a 26-year-old San Francisco woman, was walking on Minna Street between Eighth and Seventh streets when a green Toyota sedan pulled up to her about 2 p.m., police Sgt. Daryl Fong said Tuesday.

Duran, the suspected driver, asked the woman if she was lost, Fong said. The woman said she did actually need directions and, according to Fong, that’s when Perez, believed to be a passenger in the car, opened a rear door and pulled the woman into the car.

The men fled with the woman in tow, ripping a laptop from her as she struggled to break free, Fong said. Her fighting and screaming, Fong said, apparently distracted Duran, who crashed into a tree at Eighth and Minna streets. The woman then made a run for it, Fong said.

Police were called to the scene and said they spotted the suspects’ car on Seventh Street. After attempting to stop it, Duran “reversed the vehicle and struck a pedestrian in a wheelchair,” Fong said. The victim suffered a minor injury.

The car then switched into drive, causing a cop to scurry to safety, Fong said.

“The pursuit continued through several districts,” he said.

It finally ended near the Portola neighborhood, at Naples Street and Peru Avenue. The car struck a parked vehicle, delivering minor injuries to an occupant, then came to rest after striking yet another parked car, that one unoccupied, Fong said.

Duran was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery, conspiracy, felony hit-and-run, resisting and evading police, assault with a deadly weapon and driving with a suspended license. Perez faces similar charges, Fong said.
