With election outlook bleak, despairing young liberals look to Jon Stewart

When Larry King asked “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart what his “Rally to Restore Sanity” was about, even Stewart had difficulty defining it. “It is not the Anti-Glenn Beck rally,” he replied, “It’s a very similar — what we are doing is we are using the rally format to do the same thing we do with our shows. The message will be a very similar-type idea.  It’s just using the rally through a satirical format. ”

Today’s ‘Rally to Restore Sanity’ will draw a huge crowd of people who appreciate both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as two highly entertaining comedians. But if the rally is anything like the show, as Stewart claims, it will also draw young liberals who have in their own way ‘had enough.’

In January 2009, these liberals joined tens of thousands of their peers on the mall to see the fruition of a successful campaign for hope and change and their star Barack Obama. Ever since that day, they have sat and watched the divisive villains of the right tear there victory apart. Now, as the Democrats face certain failure this Election Day, that same demographic will return to the mall for a different type of rally giving a big middle finger to their timid political leaders.

Liberals have watched dumbfounded as the ‘fake astroturf’ tea parties never died, Karl Rove is still thumbing through wads of political cash, Sarah Palin hasn’t ‘shut up,’ and Fox News is still in their view,‘destroying the world.’

Who is their leader in their time of woe? A hilariously funny, foul-mouthed satirical comedian, Jon Stewart. After all, what better candidate is there to lead a rally for these new cynical converts? No one despairs over current events and cleverly dismantles political figures quite like Jon Stewart.

Stewart proved this during the darkest moment in recent liberal history when Democrats lost Ted Kennedy’s seat to the people of Massachusetts

While Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann ranted against the terrible ‘racist, facist, homophobe, bigot’ that was their characterization of Scott Brown, Jon Stewart gasped in mock horror and launched a withering attack at the hapless Martha Coakely, the Democratic candidate who lost to a Republican in Massachusetts.

As Stewart readies his biggest punchline, most liberal ideologues and journalists have frowned on his rally occurring right before the election as Democrats face heavy losses. But as the interview with President Obama proved, Stewart offers a sarcastic but subtle comeback to the political leaders that have let liberals down. After all it is pretty ‘ridiculous’ that the tea party ‘rabble’ has conquered some of the Democrats biggest stars and propelled the GOP back into power.

I think that many liberals that will march in the ‘Rally to Restore Sanity’ realize that the Barack Obama era of ‘good feeling’ politics is over and as Republicans regain power, the only comforting fact is that they will fall back into the crosshairs of the Daily Show. After all, it was the cynical Jon Stewart view of politics that sustained many despairing liberals through the Bush era when their political stars failed to beat Bush in 2004 and failed to end the war in Iraq in 2006.  If you are a liberal faced with these kinds of failures, what else is there to do but throw up your hands and laugh?
