The official call will be made Wednesday on whether to move forward with the planned closure of the Bay Bridge this weekend.

Due to necessary construction work, the westbound direction of the span is set to be closed to automobile traffic from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. However, bridge officials have warned that inclement weather conditions could postpone the closure, or delay the reopening of the bridge. Much of the planned work includes painting lane stripes, which could be ruined by rain.

John Goodwin, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which operates the Bay Bridge, said the weekend forecast would have to call for long-lasting heavy rains for the closure to be delayed.

Rick Canepa, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said some light rain is expected Saturday morning, and additional showers could come Sunday night. He said weather patterns don’t indicate any major storms will visit the Bay Area this weekend.
