With the regular season out the way and six teams having already qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs, the West Catholic Athletic League tournament, which begins today, will be for bragging rights, but one school seeks to right a wrong.
Serra (20-4, 11-3 WCAL) lost the WCAL tournament title game by one point to Mitty last season and is seeking redemption for that loss.
Serra swept its first-round opponent, Riordan (5-19, 3-11), during the regular season, but has struggled to pick up wins recently.
The Padres have lost two of their past three games, including losing at home against St. Ignatius on Thursday.
Senior Henry Caruso scored 26 points for the Padres, while the Wildcats had two players with 20 or more points in the game.
Serra, along with Mitty, St. Francis, Bellarmine, Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius, have already qualified for the CCS playoffs heading into the WCAL tournament.
Riordan had lost eight straight games before snapping that streak with a win at St. Francis on Saturday.
Top-seeded Mitty (21-3, 13-1) has won nine straight games and draws Valley Christian (11-13, 2-12), who the Monarchs beat Thursday 66-48.
Mitty’s last loss came against De La Salle on Jan. 16, its second straight loss after dropping a league road game to Serra.
The intercity rivalry will be renewed as Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius will also clash in the first round.
Sacred Heart Cathedral (20-3, 10-4) swept St. Ignatius during the regular season, with the most recent coming in a 68-46 win for the Fighting Irish.
Sacred Heart Cathedral took Mitty to overtime, but fell to the two-time defending champions
60-58 on Saturday.
St. Ignatius (10-13, 4-10) got a much-needed win against Serra and has a bit of momentum coming into this week.
Sophomore Trevor Dunbar had 21 and junior Stephen Domingo had a team-high 22 against Serra.
Fourth-seeded Bellarmine and fifth-seeded St. Francis meet in a rubber match of the regular season where the teams split their two matchups.
The semifinals will take place Friday at the school home sites with the tournament wrapping up on Saturday at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
