Parents hoping to get their children in to a different school have until Friday to get their name on a waitlist.
Waitlists could be long considering 20 percent of 13,676 applicants did not receive one of their school choices, according to the San Francisco Unified School District. The deadline for students to be on a waitlist to get into a school of their choice is July 23.
School assignment has been a topic of contention in the past few years in the school district. Parents complained the system was inefficient. The district's initial goal was to create more diverse schools but instead has caused headaches for parents trying to narrow down the dozens of schools available.
School board members have worked vigorously for years to change the procedure.
In March, the district approved a new system that will allow parents to chose schools close to their homes, but also allow them to chose a school anywhere in The City.
