Victim in Excelsior fatal beating identified

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified a man who was fatally beaten Friday night in the Excelsior district as 39-year-old San Mateo resident Alfonso Rodriguez.

Officers responded to a call about 9:50 p.m. reporting that two men were beating someone sitting inside a car at the intersection of Munich and Cordova streets, according to police Sgt. Wilfred Williams.

Police arrived to find Rodriguez suffering from injuries in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, Williams said. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about 10:45 p.m.

Investigators canvassed the area and conducted interviews immediately after finding Rodriguez, Williams said. There are no suspects, although Williams said the assault did not appear to be gang-related.

The medical examiner will determine the specific cause of death, but Williams said weapons did not appear to be involved.

If the death is determined to be a homicide, it will be the 41st in The City this year.
