Vegan fashion show breaking ground in SF

Karine Brighten, owner of Karine Brighten Events and a board member of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society, organized The City's first vegan fashion show, taking place from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Oct. 2 in Golden Gate Park's County Fair Building. For more information, visit www.sfveganfashionshow.com.

What is vegan fashion? It means no leather, no fur, no wool, nothing that comes from an animal.

Where did you get the idea for this event? My friends in Montreal have been doing this for a couple years. When I moved here a year ago, I did some research and was surprised to see it had never been done before. Vegan fashion is now more important than ever for environmental issues and animal rights.

What’s great about this event? This is not going to be your typical fashion show, but it will be educational. Our emcee ... will be reading descriptions of each outfit so people will know exactly how it was made and what materials were used.

Why did you decide to go vegan? I went vegan four years ago after my husband took a class at law school. I learned all about factory farming and it really opened my eyes. We made the decision together and haven’t looked back since.
