  • The final stage of the Amgen Tour of California will start in San Francisco's Marina Green before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

The eighth and final stage of the Tour of California will kickoff from Marina Green in San Francisco before crossing over the Golden Gate Bridge during a rolling traffic break, organizers announced Tuesday.

The bridge sidewalk will remain open to provide spectators an up-close look at the peloton zipping across the span. Once across the landmark, riders will pedal up Highway 1 before the race concludes in downtown Santa Rosa for the first time.

In November, organizers announced for the first time in the event’s eight-year history the race would take a South-to-North route instead of its usual southerly trail.

The total distance of the race will be approximately 750 miles with action kicking off May 12 and concluding May 19.

Other Bay Area stops include the sixth stage time trial through San Jose and a 93-mile stage that will take riders from Livermore to the summit of Mount Diablo.

“We take great pride in creating challenging, beautiful Amgen Tour of California routes that attract top international riders and showcase the state’s amazing terrain and scenery,” Executive Director of the Tour of California Kristin Bachochin said in a statement.

Robert Gesink of the Netherlands won the 2012 Tour of California.
