  • The Dew Tour returns to San Francisco.
San Francisco has always found ways to put its fingerprint on the hundreds of events that come to The City each year, and this weekend’s installment of the action sports Dew Tour will be no exception.

Rather than fill an arena with a generic course, this event — making its second appearance in San Francisco — will take place in the heart of downtown as a course that reflects several of The City’s landmarks rises in Civic Center Plaza from Thursday through Sunday.

Ryan Nyquist — who is originally from Los Gatos, now lives in San Jose, and has won nearly every title in every discipline in his 16-year BMX career — said having the event show respect to the place he grew up riding means a lot.

“I was really happy when I heard it was going to be in San Francisco,” he said. “Obviously for local reasons, but the way they have it set up, they really did a good job making it feel like they didn’t just plop it into The City and just kind of have an event. They made every little detail count.”

Nyquist, 32, said his best memories of riding here are unfortunately unavailable to the next generation, thanks to the renovation of the Embarcadero that began after the collapse of the Embarcadero Freeway after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.

This event is a way to remember those times, he said.

“I remember when I was a kid taking road trips up to go ride along the Embarcadero setup before they changed it,” he said. “They’re going to build the street course here and try to emulate a lot of stuff. I think it’s cool because it’s really paying homage to the city that they’re in and remembering the roots of that city. I think that’s a really cool way to do it instead of just slapping down, oh here’s a grind ledge, here’s this, here’s that. Now it’s like this unique interesting event.”

The event, which is free to attend, includes skate and BMX street, BMX dirt, BMX dirt best trick, FMX (freestyle motorcross)and BMX streetstyle. Grammy award-winning hip-hop artist Common will perform Saturday, and Sunday will feature a community day that gives local youth a chance to ride the course.
