Top 10 wish list

San Francisco Police Commission Vice President Thomas "Tip" Mazzucco has got a top-ten wish list this holiday season: get the lawyers and police officers in the ten oldest police disciplinary cases to show up Wednesday to schedule hearings.

Under considerable pressure to reduce the backlog of disciplinary cases, the Police Commission has been settling cases, but there are still about 35 officers assigned to desk duty because their hearings have been delayed.

That costs a lot of money and it keeps officers, either innocent or guilty, loafing around when they could be on the streets or terminated.

Of course, as another commission member, Petra DeJesus, pointed out last Wednesday, officers and their lawyers have an incentive to delay cases – some of which go back to 2003. The longer an officer is in the Department, the larger the pension when he or she retires.
