Third-party spending in San Francisco mayor’s race exceeds $313K 

The latest tally on independent expenditures, otherwise known as third-party spending, in the San Francisco mayor’s race has hit $313,280. The spending will only increase as it gets closer to Election Day on Nov. 8.

There are a number of third-party spending groups, including several recently set up to back Mayor Ed Lee.

Tech investor Ron Conway’s independent committee for Lee, San Franciscans for Jobs and Good Government, has raised $364,000 and has $233,216 in the bank. That includes a $50,000 from Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and $151,000 from Conway himself. Another Lee third-party committee, known as Committee for Effective City Management, has raised $18,452. Contributors include New York-based 4U Services, an IT company and subcontractor for work on the Central Subway contract, donated $5,000.

About $130,000 of the total third party spending to date was in support of Lee. About $100,000 was spent opposing Lee from third-party groups backing state Sen. Leland Yee who is also a mayoral candidate.

The Ethics Commission is treating $50,000 of the money spent by the committee in favor of the Proposition D pension measure, placed on the ballot by Public Defender Jeff Adachi, as third-party spending in support of Adachi.

The City’s largest labor union, Service Employees International Union Local 1021, has spent about $10,000 a piece on three candidates, Supervisor John Avalos, Supervisor Bevan Dufty and Yee.

Nearly half the total third-party spending to be spent on the mayor’s race is expected to be spent a week before the election if past spending trends hold true.
