The Daily Outrage: The sludge isn't the nuclear waste

WHO: U.S. Department of Energy

WHAT: Spent $43 million over three years removing radioactive sludge from the Hanford Site's K Basin in Washington state. That project was canceled in 2007. Now DOE has a new plan for sludge removal, with different reports estimating the cost to taxpayers as either $104 million or $175 million.

WHY IT'S AN OUTRAGE: A DOE audit determined the $43 million project hadn't produced any results, blaming it on a rush to complete the work by legal deadlines.

WHERE TO VENT: Call the DOE inspector general at 202-586-4073.
