A woman who was stalked and sexually assaulted inside her Telegraph Hill apartment last weekend is being lauded by prosecutors for her bravery in helping police catch the suspect.

The victim was heroic when she made a last-ditch effort to alert police of her attacker’s presence inside her apartment, Assistant District Attorney Alex Bastian said Wednesday, the same day as the preliminary hearing for the suspect, 25-year-old Jovan Jones of Marin City, was held.

According to court records, the victim was talking on her cellphone as she was walking home about 8 p.m. Saturday. Jones was reportedly following her, and when she got to her apartment he allegedly forced his way in at knifepoint.

Jones then allegedly threatened and assaulted her, court records show. The victim was still on the phone as the assault was going, so the person on the other side of the line called police.

Jones tried to force the victim to pretend that nothing was wrong when police arrived at the building, according to court records. Instead, the victim ran to the balcony and screamed for help. After that, Jones reportedly grabbed her backpack and jumped off the balcony to escape.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter using thermal imaging assisted San Francisco police in the search for Jones, court records said. He was found hiding on a hillside behind garbage cans, wearing the victim’s backpack.

Jones faces numerous charges, including burglary, rape and sexual penetration by a foreign object, Assistant District Attorney Alex Bastian said. He faces multiple life terms in prison if convicted, Bastian said.

Prosecutors also have linked him to a separate robbery that happened earlier Saturday.
