Students to duck and cover during statewide earthquake drill

Thousands of San Francisco Unified School District students will “drop, cover and hold” Thursday morning during the annual Shakeout Drill.

The Shakeout, held statewide by the Department of Emergency Management, is organized to prepare Californians for a major earthquake.

It is scheduled for 10:21 a.m. Thursday.

Students, child development centers and administrative sites in San Francisco’s public schools will practice reacting safely during an earthquake. According to the emergency management department that includes “dropping” to the ground; taking “cover” under a desk or a sturdy table and “holding on” until the shaking stops.

According to the school district administration, all site staff will report attendance to the district’s emergency operations center during the drill, just as they would after an actual earthquake.
