The financial director of the Stanford Solar Project is heading to Australia this fall along with other student project contributors from the university to race a new solar car. The group is planning to race Xenith in the 3,000-kilometer World Solar Challenge, which is the most competitive solar car race in the world.
What makes this solar car so special? The solar panels will be the first flexible glass panels on a solar car that we know of. If the car ran on gas, it would get about 1,700 miles per gallon. But since it runs on electricity, it takes the same amount of energy to run as a hairdryer or toaster.
What is the Stanford Solar Project all about? The project is all student-run. We are taking what we learned in the classroom and using it to build the car. It’s really cool that students are building solar cars that can race at highway speeds without using a drop of gasoline.
What is so exciting about the race itself? This is a long, endurance race across the entire continent of Australia. It draws the most competitive teams and gives us a chance to show off our unique ideas and see what other teams are doing.
