Spring training irrelevant, unless you're Tim Lincecum

Spring training results don’t mean anything, right?

Sure, except when there aren’t any results at all.

Not in the 0-for-4 sense, mind you. Or the five-earned-runs-in-two-plus-innings sense, either.

No, we’re talking as in no results, period, sense. As in not playing.

That’s why Tim Lincecum getting scratched from consecutive starts last week is a bigger deal than it might appear.
It’s early and all, and he has time on his side for sure, but we all know this isn’t a normal spring for The Freak. This is when he’s supposed to be convincing us that the ugliness of 2012 was a freak occurrence, a blip on an otherwise brilliant screen.

It’s too early to freak out, but he’s not exactly doing that just yet, is he?

WBC a snooze

USA vs. Mexico in the World Baseball Classic? Sorry, just couldn’t get all worked up over it. Not sure any WBC matchup is worth getting geeked up over.

Doesn’t help that Japan, the underdog bully of the tourney in its first two editions, has ZERO players you recognize this time. Might as well be watching the Midland Rockhounds.

Sad but true: Unless we get USA vs. Cuba, which holds true international intrigue, zzz.

Hot Curry

Stephen Curry is the best shooter in the NBA. Nobody who knows hoops or the mechanics of the shot will dispute that.

Curry being left off the Western Conference All-Star team, however, wasn’t exactly the crime many local voices have been shouting it was.

His 54-point outburst at Madison Square Garden was truly awesome, as was the genius provided by whomever gets credit for saying Steph turned The Mecca “into Studio 54” for that night.

Bottom line is the Dubs lost that game.

Take nothing away from Curry’s effort, but until 54 points translates to a road victory, it’s not the type of transcendent performance with which we associate no-brainer All-Stars.

It’s just a really, really sweet game. In a loss. For a team that, at the time, was flailing to maintain the borderline relevance it had spent the first two months of the season establishing. (And still is!)

Curry will be an All-Star next season as long as he stays healthy. Now? Great shooter on a decent team.

Hit and miss

Give the Niners a pass-fail on two of their biggest non-Alex Smith decisions of the offseason if they sever ties with Randy Moss.

The pass, no pun intended, would apply to saying “see ya” to Moss. He served his purpose in getting Michael Crabtree to grow up, and he filled an on-field role fairly capably for most of the year. Now he must go before he truly tarnishes the renaissance.

Cutting David Akers? Fail. The guy was hurt. The free-agent market for kickers stinks. A healthy Akers deserved a chance at redemption.

Whisker wars

Oh, and for the love of Nolan Ryan (i.e., God), will someone please tell A’s outfielder Josh Reddick to knock it off with the beard thing?

Brian Wilson you’re not, brother. In personality, or in stature within the game. Bang another 30 bombs and keep playing Gold Glove defense, and we’ll revisit it all next spring.

For now, leave the silliness to the wrestlers and mix in a shave.
