Son of Supreme Court justice seeks assembly seat

Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting finds himself battling San Francisco Library Commissioner Michael Breyer, son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, for the 19th Assembly District seat vacated by termed-out Assembly member Fiona Ma.

Breyer is a businessman who helped found a company called Courtroom Connect, which broadcasts trials. He threw his hat into race on Friday.

He has enlisted the help of political consultant Michael Terris, who ran the campaign for Assembly member Ma.

Breyer recently became more noticeable in the local political arena when he founded the “Draft Ed Lee” campaign. And Sen. Dianne Feinstein had encouraged Lee to appoint Breyer to a seat on the Board of Supervisors, but that didn’t happen. Lee opted instead to appoint chair of the Planning Commission Christina Olague.

The deadline to file for the race is Wednesday.
