A man who was fatally shot in South of Market early Sunday morning has been identified as Stoney Whetstone, 28, of Union City, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday.

Whetstone had reportedly been sitting in a car in the 700 block of Mission Street with another man about 2:41 a.m. when gunfire erupted from unknown suspects in an unknown location, police said. Whetstone was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other victim was taken to a hospital with injuries initially considered life-threatening, police said. However, media reports Monday said the second victim is expected to survive.

Whetstone was memorialized by friends on Twitter the day after the shooting. One tweet said, “R.I.P. Stoney I luv you bruh and I got you!!!”

The shooting reportedly happened near the intersection of Fourth and Mission streets close to the Metreon mall complex, where retailer Target will open up its first store in The City today.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call police at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411.
