Skate This Art show coming to SF

Ex-skateboarder Anna-Lisa Stardust van der Valk is the producer for Skate This Art, which is holding its fall show at Sub-Mission Art Space, 2183 Mission St., from Sunday to Nov. 2, with an opening reception Oct. 16. For more information, visit www.skatethisart.com.

What is Skate This Art? Skate This Art is just sort of a loosely locally based organization that puts on skateboard art exhibits.

Do you have to be a skateboarder to do skateboard art? No, absolutely not. In fact, I would venture to guess more than half of our artists have never been on a skateboard.

What kinds of skateboard art is there? It’s not just painting. We have artists who do mosaic collage. We have artists who take the board apart, reassemble it with hinges and make sculptural pieces out of it.

What’s unique about this year’s exhibition? This is the first time we’re having live bands play at our reception and also the first time we’re having live art demos. We also have a silent auction on the skateboard art, so people who come to the reception will have an opportunity to buy the art at a bid price that’s usually lower than the sale price.
