Rookie offensive lineman Jason Slowey, a sixth-round pick out of Western Oregon, was one of 12 players cut by the 49ers on Monday as they had to trim their roster to 75 players. Slowey saw limited action in the preseason.

Receiver Joe Hastings, who was on the practice squad last year before a late-season call-up to the 53-man roster, was also let go.

The 10 other players released Monday were fullback Cameron Bell, outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown, defensive tackle Patrick Butrym, wide receiver Ben Hannula, defensive tackle Matthew Masifilo, cornerback Cory Nelms, cornerback Deante’ Purvis, tight end Joe Sawyer, kicker Giorgio Tavecchio and wide receiver Brian Tyms.

Meanwhile, 49ers designated rookie running back Jewel Hampton for the reserve/nonfootball injury list and linebacker Darius Fleming to the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

The players are exempt from the 49ers’ active roster and will not be eligible to practice until at least the Tuesday following the completion of Week 6 (Oct. 16) of the NFL schedule.

Teams must reduce their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 on Friday by 6 p.m. and can establish a practice squad beginning Saturday.

Cox carving out a role: Cornerback Perrish Cox picked off a pass in Sunday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos, his former team, and could be in line for an increased role if he continues to play well.

“He’s a backup nickel right now, a backup corner,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “But if he keeps playing the way he’s playing and becomes an expert at his craft, we’ll find a way to get him in there.”
