Shvonne Austin thrives for sustainable living

The environmentally conscious San Franciscan began a project back in June, budgeting $50 every month to buy reusable coffee mugs that she hands out for free to friends, co-workers and strangers in line at coffee shops. Visit her blog at www.heresyourmug.blogspot.com.

Why did you decide to start this project? I started paying more attention to the environment, our waste and sustainable living. I didn’t like the idea of anonymously donating to a major environmental organization because you don’t really see the results. I decided to take the money I’d be giving and do something hands-on with an immediate impact.

Why reusable mugs? That was my worst vice.

What response do you get after handing strangers free mugs? Confusion mostly. We’re trained to think that when anyone gives us something for free, it’s not really free, so I think they’re confused that all I’m asking for is action.

What do you hope will come out of this? I hope it will encourage people to think about their daily habits and how they can be more sustainable. I think once you start taking a mug to get filled every day, it will start a spiral effect.
