Sharks captain Marleau inks extension

The Sharks locked up another one of their core players when captain Patrick Marleau agreed to a two-year, $12.6 million contract extension. The deal will keep the Sharks' career scoring leader under contract through the 2009-10 season. Marleau will be paid $4.5 million this season.

Top-line center Joe Thornton recently signed a three-year, $21.6 million extension that will keep the former Hart Trophy winner in San Jose through the 2010-11 season. Forward Milan Michalek and defenseman Craig Rivet also signed extensions this summer.

The Sharks open training camp in two weeks and have their first preseason game Sept. 18 at the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks' season opener is Oct. 4 at Edmonton. Their home opener is Oct. 13 against Boston.
