Shank-wielding mango thief attacks Haight merchant 

The perils of fruit-selling became all too real for a Haight Street merchant Sunday morning, when a man who absconded with some mangoes pulled an improvised blade, according to police.

The theft took place at about 11:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of Haight Street near Ashbury Street, Park Station police said.

The alleged thief, a 26-year-old parolee, walked off with the mangoes without paying, and when the merchant objected, the man “surrendered the fruit but attacked the merchant with a belt and a sharpened comb handle,” according to the police report.

Bystanders held the thief until officers arrived and arrested him for robbery, police said.
