SFPD crime lab hiring DNA techs

Getting San Francisco’s crime lab to speed up its DNA testing has had nearly enough twists and turns to make a double helix — but progress is finally being made, police say.

For months, the San Francisco Police Department has been outsourcing DNA testing work in an attempt to reduce their testing backlog.

But this was intended to be only a temporary solution: the department promised to hire three new DNA technicians, which would allow the crime lab to take back most or all of its own testing work again.

The Examiner reported last month that the holdup involved a test that had to be written for the new technician candidates to take as part of the hiring process.

That has finally been completed, police Sgt. Michael Andraychak reported, and a DNA technician job has been posted.

“The department received numerous applications and those applications are being screened to verify the candidates qualifications,” he said.
