Flights leaving and entering San Francisco International Airport may have significant delays because of the weather.

Arriving flights are delayed an average of two hours, according to airport status information. The low cloud ceiling is affecting planes, according to the airport duty manager.

“When clouds are at a certain level you can't do a visual approach,” duty manager John Ginty said. “So you have to spread the airplanes out.”

Following clear and sunny skies all weekend, rain returned to San Francisco Monday. Showers will continue through Monday night, but will return to partly sunny skies Tuesday and remain clear the remainder of the week.

Flight delays are expected to last through midnight Monday. Airport officials warn travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. The delay was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration at 8 a.m. Monday.
