SF Mayor Ed Lee urges Congress to green light America’s Cup

With big plans already underway for San Francisco’s hosting of the 34th America’s Cup regatta in 2013, an important step remains in making it a done deal — approval from Congress.

Mayor Ed Lee issued a statement Friday urging Washington, D.C., lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 1759, which would define “eligible vessels” for the competition, including the racing yachts and support vessels. The bill forbids ferries and vessels transporting merchandise between ports.

Introduced Oct. 20, the bill has already passed the Senate and is now being considered by the House of Representatives.

“I urge the leadership of the House to take up and pass this bill that will help create jobs and boost our local economy,” Lee said in a statement.
