Second Harvest hoping for holiday donations

Kathy Jackson, the CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank, the largest nonprofit provider of food to low-income households in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, is asking for donations in the largest Holiday Food and Fund Drive in the United States, running through mid-January. For more information or to donate, visit www.shfb.org.

Have you seen an increase in need? Over the last two years, we have seen a 31 percent increase in the number of people we serve. Last year we served on average 231,000 individuals per month. To put that in perspective, that’s like providing food to every man, woman, and child in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara combined.

Why is the Holiday Food and Fund Drive so important? The holidays are a time when people’s minds turn to Thanksgiving, family, and community. The fact that some families will have empty tables while others have full tables really resonates at this time of year.

What is the goal of the drive? We are looking to raise 1.7 million pounds of donated food and $11 million, which is almost half of our yearly operating budget.
