Oscar-nominated actress and singer Jennifer Hudson got her start as a contestant on "American Idol," but her big break isn’t exactly a fond memory. In fact, the breakout star of "Dreamgirls" reveals being put through the "Idol" wringer was a traumatic experience that made her feel "abused."
"On ‘American Idol,’ you go through this mental thing; you’ve got to get yourself back together," Jennifer explains in the new issue of Essence,on the cover of which she looks radiant. "You’ve been abused, misled and brainwashed to believe whatever they want you to think. … You become a character."
But she didn’t let the show pigeonhole her or leave her feeling like a failure: "I just knew I had to sing my way out of it. I don’t believe in looking back, and I didn’t look back."
Obviously, her strategy paid off big time.
Former "Prison Break" star Lane Garrison could be facing serious criminal charges that, if he’s convicted, would earn him more than 10 years in prison. (Insert life-imitates-art joke of your choice here.)
Wednesday, police recommended to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office that the actor be charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, after a December accident that left a teenager dead.
The 26-year-old actor was reportedly speeding through Beverly Hills with three teenage passengers when his sport utility vehicle went out of control and hit a tree. The kids had allegedly invited the star to a party.
A spokesman for the Beverly Hills Police Department said Lane’s blood alcohol level tested 2½ times that of the legal limit, and that tests also pointed to the presence of cocaine in the actor’s system.
Lane’s attorney had no comment as of press time.

Just a day after breakup rumors broke, Kate Moss visited on-off boyfriend Pete Doherty’s London rehab facility with a mysterious black envelope, the U.K.’s Daily Mail says.
The supermodel was said to have taken some space from her troubled rocker beau when photos of him shooting up drugs during their Thai New Year’s getaway surfaced.
"Of course Kate still loves Pete and vice-versa, but she’s a clever woman and knows that she has got to put her career first," a pal of hers allegedly told the Daily Mail. "Kate needs to start looking after herself — or at least be seen to be doing so — and has been strongly advised to take some time off from Pete. This means not getting herself photographed with him, and certainly no raucous nights out — at least until the fuss has all died down a bit."
But Wednesday, Kate briefly stopped by the clinic where the Babyshambles frontman is being treated and dropped off the envelope.
Odd. Why couldn’t she just dump him by text message like everyone else?
The DUI case against Nicole Richie has taken a serious turn. Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol turned over the investigation of her December arrest to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office — which, as E! News reports, seems to suggest that felony charges are in the works.
The "Simple Life" star was busted Dec. 11 for driving her SUV in the wrong lane on a Burbank freeway. While a sobriety test did not show that she was intoxicated by alcohol, Nicole herself copped to having smoked marijuana and taken the prescription drug Vicodin.
Due to an earlier DUI conviction, Nicole would be legally required to serve time in prison if a second DUI charge sticks.
With Paris on probation, Lindsay in rehab, and Nicole in hot water, Hollywood’s party scene could really suffer. Britney, we’re counting on you to pick up the slack!
