San Francisco Performances’ upcoming 33rd season opens with concerts by pianist Jonathan Biss focusing on composer Robert Schumann, and continues with a virtuoso violin series featuring Hilary Hahn, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Midori; a 75th birthday celebration of composer Philip Glass; and West Coast premieres of new works by choreographer Paul Taylor among its dozens of offerings.

Announcing the 2012-13 season of chamber music, recitals, jazz and contemporary dance today, president Ruth A. Felt said "Schumann Under the Influence" includes a commissioned piano quintet by young American composer Timothy Andres and the Elias Quartet, making its San Francisco debut.

The season begins Oct. 4 with Biss’ first presentation, featuring tenor Mark Padmore, clarinetist Carey Bell and violist Scott St. John in a program of homages by and for Schumann at Herbst Theatre.

The season closes with "Philip Glass at 75: Koyaanisqatsi" a screening of Godfrey Reggio’s film with a live performance by the Philip Glass Ensemble at the Davies Symphony Hall.

In the violin series, Hahn appears Feb. 9 at the Herbst Theatre playing commissions of short pieces by living composers and Bach and Beethoven sonatas. Mutter performs March 4 at Davies Hall playing works by Lutoslawski, Schubert, Previn and Saint-Saëns, and Midori performs Bach’s sonatas and partitas March 23-24 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

From May 1-5, the Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to the Novellus Theater. Among its offerings are local premieres of "Gossamer Gallant," "The Uncommitted" and a yet-to-be-created work.

Guitar, piano, chamber, jazz, family matinees and a salon series round out the extensive programming, and the annual gala Oct. 19 at San Francisco’s City Club features vocalist Paula West.
