A 26-year-old Sausalito man was shot dead on his birthday in the Marina in an apparent case of road rage.
Darren Mears was killed just after midnight Saturday near the intersection of Scott Street and Marina Boulevard, according to Officer Neville Gittens of the San Francisco Police Department. He was shot once in the chest.
It is unknown what Mears and his girlfriend, who was in the car with him when the incident occurred, were doing at the time. A number listed for Mears’ Sausalito home was disconnected Sunday.
The incident occurred after Mears and the driver of a white, "old, beat up and rusty" pick up truck got into an altercation in one of the "many" parking lots at the Marina Green, according to Gittens. After exiting the parking lot, Mears confronted the suspect.
"As the two vehicles were leaving there was a road rage type of thing going on … the victim walks up to the suspect and the suspect shoots him in the chest," he said. "The victim then walked back to his car and his girlfriend then called the police."
There was a delay in the police reaching the scene because Mears’ girlfriend did not know their exact location, according to Gittens. He was not sure how long the delay was, but Mears was dead at the scene when officers arrived.
A white male driving the truck fled eastbound on Marina Blvd. after the shooting and is still at large. Gittens said there was a roof rack in the bed of the truck often used to carry lumber or other large items, and added there are no other leads on the suspect.
