San Mateo hands over FedEx drug case to feds

After learning that the federal government had indicted him, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office dropped charges on Wednesday against a man who allegedly tried to ship 100 grams of cocaine and 3 kilos of methamphetamine to the Philippines.

Gabriel Uribe-Bautista of Redwood City was arrested in September after returning to a FedEx store to ask why the two packages he had sent Aug. 24 did not arrive at their destination. The charges the District Attorney’s Office would have brought are similar to those filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, prosecutors said Thursday.

Uribe-Bautista has been in custody on $1 million bail.
