San Mateo County mail theft suspect assures authorities he was not involved in Boston bombings

A Russian man who allegedly went on a mailbox-bashing spree in Portola Valley — and later crashed his SUV while fleeing cops — wanted to make something very clear before he was handcuffed.

“This has nothing to do with Boston,” 21-year-old Alexander Dombovic reportedly said to San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies as they ordered him out of his vehicle with their guns drawn April 26.

The bizarre series of events unfolded about 10:10 p.m. A 13-year-old boy was reading in his bedroom while his parents slept when he heard a car come down the driveway of their home, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Without waking his parents, Wagstaffe said, the boy went outside and saw Dombovic, a Palo Alto resident, rummaging through his father’s SUV in the driveway.

The boy asked Dombovic what he was doing, and he allegedly responded by attacking the boy with a bat, which caused only bruising. He then drove off in his own SUV, Wagstaffe said.

Soon after, sheriff’s deputies reportedly saw Dombovic driving at them on the wrong side of the road without headlights on and had to swerve to avoid him. A chase ensued, Wagstaffe said, and ended with Dombovic losing control and crashing into a ravine.

As soon as deputies confronted him, Dombovic reportedly identified himself as being Chechen and stated that he had no connection to the fatal bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15. The suspects in those bombings were Chechen natives.
Inside Dombovic’s vehicle were 129 pieces of stolen mail from 18 victims, according to prosecutors. Deputies linked him to five smashed mailboxes in the area, Wagstaffe said.

Prosecutors believe he might have been stealing the mail in hopes of scoring credit card numbers.

Wagstaffe said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the incident.

Dombovic is out of custody after posting $50,000 bail and is being represented by a public defender. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing today.
